Full Head of Writing Steam that Just Puffed Out
Have you had that happen? I was in the heated midst of in-person, onsite and secondary research for a nonfiction MG — and got sucked up by travel trips, more and more excuses, the joy of helping with not one, but two grandchildren. Wonderful, amazing times. And great excuses. Although grandbaby 2 with a toddler did truly have me moving nonstop, barely time to shower and when I went to sleep, I was completely exhausted.

Mental Blockade
Then it becomes mental. Bet you have had this . . . no one will want my story anyway, its a lot of work, I can’t seem to get organized, I reshuffle and reread the same stacks of papers and online research multiple times, I question my research documentation technique, I reread past SCBWI NF session notes, famous author notes, and the list goes on and on.

“Writing Avoidance” Disease
It’s a spiral into the dreaded writer’s affliction of “writing avoidance.” It’s like avoiding doing something that will take a lot of time and you don’t know if you’ll have a good outcome, no matter how hard you try – and you’re type A and are used to working hard to get successful outcomes.

“Butt in the Chair “is Not Enough
This is great writers advice but once the Blockade has set in, I can find tons of minutiae to do in my chair. It’s time again to commit to a writing schedule, be “gentle” with myself, and accept the writing progress as it comes.
